MATERIALS & PROCESS

Understanding the craft.

The following is a general explanation of cigar production. It does not describe an ALINE factory or establish the origin of any specific product.

01 / WRAPPER

The outer leaf

The wrapper is the visible outer leaf. Selection considers its structure, flexibility and appearance.

02 / BINDER

The supporting layer

The binder holds the filler together and helps define the shape of the bunch before the outer wrapper is applied.

03 / FILLER

The internal leaves

Filler forms the interior. Long filler uses whole leaves; short filler uses smaller leaf pieces. The construction method varies by product.

Geography, climate and leaf selection

Growing conditions and the position of leaves on a tobacco plant influence their physical characteristics. Country of cultivation alone does not identify a blend. For a specific cigar, refer to the manufacturer’s documented wrapper, binder and filler origins.

Fermentation and aging

After curing, selected leaves undergo controlled fermentation and later aging. Temperature, moisture, duration and handling differ between producers and leaf types; there is no single schedule that applies to all cigars.

Hand rolling and terminology

A torcedor assembles filler and binder, forms the bunch and applies the wrapper and cap. Hecho a mano means made by hand; it is a production description, not proof of a manufacturer’s identity or a health benefit.

REFERENCE LIBRARY

Anatomy, dimensions and terminology.

01 / ANATOMY

Physical structure

Cap and head identify the closed end; the body is the main length and the foot is the open end. Wrapper, binder and filler describe the leaf layers.

02 / VITOLA

Shape and measurement

Ring gauge measures diameter in sixty-fourths of an inch: 50 corresponds to approximately 19.84 mm. Names such as Robusto, Toro and Churchill do not always have identical dimensions across brands.

03 / DESCRIPTORS

Reading characteristics

Mild, medium and full are descriptive scales rather than universal measurements. Aroma words are subjective comparisons and do not necessarily mean that flavourings were added. They do not indicate safety.
